Shoppers go crazy for this season's "it bags"

Berlin- Their names are Betty, Ramona, Roxanne and Julie and they drive some women absolutely crazy. They are not, however, other women competing for their lovers' affections. They are in fact the names of this season's most sought- after handbags. Every season there are a handful of styles that are regarded as the "it bags."

They are often chic and limited-edition designer pieces seen in the hands of prominent people whose fame and class are supposed to be transferred to the regular customers when they buy the bag.

Shoppers who can fork out the necessary cash to own an it bag also must have some clue about designer labels because not every it bag really is one, said Maike Senger of Berlin, founder of a website where customers can rent designer purses. For designers the term "it bag" has become an important part of their marketing strategy.

A purse earns its trendy status only when several factors come together. "It bags" are a combination of a designer label, style and media hype, according to the British website handbag.com. This season designs by Yves Saint Laurent, Prada und Chloe are leading the pack.

The results of a People magazine study also help with the selection process. The question: "What star carried a particular bag?" can be key to determining whether the purse is an "it bag" or not.

"If Kate Moss carries a particular bag, you can be sure that it will be an it bag," said Senger.

Style consultant Andreas Rose of Frankfurt said another feature of "it bags" is they are produced only in limited numbers.

"Some people are thrilled to find a rare stamp. For others the thrill is owning one of only 5,000 bags just like the one Sharon Stone has," said Rose, describing the allure of the hunt for a particular purse.

Paradoxically, when searching for a particular designer bag swift action is often as necessary as patience.

"Prominent people often are dressed by designers at no cost," said Rose. Even before the fashion season begins, prominent people like Moss, Paris Hilton and Madonna set the new trends that the rest of the fashion world willingly follows.

Regular customers usually don't make the waiting list that designers keep for purses that are top favourites. That has annoyed some customers, especially people who are so passionate about purses they collect them.

"You can never have too many purses," said Wiebke Nieland of Berlin, who designs pieces using unusual fabrics for her label Schneckenhaus. Purses accent an outfit, adding the right touch "also on days when women have no desire to do themselves up."

Every woman should have two to three designer purses in her closet, said Rose.

"It depends, of course, on one's budget," he said. However, in terms of fashion, an expensive purse is always a safe investment. "They can always be sold later for a good price."

Shoppers who can't commit to or afford a designer bag have a lot of choice in the shops or they can turn to Senger's website. Customers can register there and rent purses from a network of designers from Coccinelle to Gucci. The type of purse that a customer wants depends on what type of monthly rental fee they choose. Prices run from 29 to 79 euros (39 to 106 dollars) a month.

Status handbags hit new highs

STATUS symbols take many forms. From fancy jewellery and designer clothes to luxury cars and oversized houses, they send a variety of silent messages from their owners.

"Notice me," some status symbols plead, while others appear to boast, "Anything you can buy, I can buy bigger and better." In recent years the status game for women has added another category: "arm wear", a term describing pricey designer handbags, coveted by women of all economic levels.

Walk through high-end fashion stores and you're likely to see handbags displayed on walls like paintings in an art museum. There are bags with buckles and chains. Bags with pockets and pouches. Bags with snakeskin-embossed leather or python and alligator skins. What they all have in common is a hefty price tag.

The current US InStyle magazine includes pages of handbags, with prices soaring to $6700 for a yellow leather creation by Versace. In London, the most astonishing arm wear of all may be a Louis Vuitton patchwork bag costing $58,000. As The Times reports, that's nearly $7000 more than the cost of a new Mercedes.

If that's just slightly too much, you might consider one made by Fendi of sable and chinchilla. That will be $49,000, please, Madam. Such purchases elevate the term "bag lady" to new social status.

For women of means, a four or five-figure handbag represents a mere blip in their chequebook.

Easy come, easy go. But for those with modest pay packets and middle-class lives, even a $350 or $650 bag can hurt a budget.

Just ask a young fashion designer in London, who told The Times: "I know a lot of women who will starve to get a handbag. I've got a lot of friends like that."

How ironic that the very objects designed to carry wallets are playing a role in flattening them.

In defence of such splurges, a 30-year-old make-up artist who has bought more than 200 handbags told a reporter, "When I wear a designer bag, the way I walk is different, the way I feel is different. It makes me feel good to have a designer bag."

The handbag mania comes on the heels of an earlier passion for expensive shoes -- think Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo.

But even the most expensive status symbols can prove to be ephemeral.

Just when some handbag lovers might be thinking they own enough and can start stashing a pay cheque or two in the bank, another temptation is arriving on the fashion scene.

The new must-have accessory, according to trend-spotters, is an expensive watch. And not just one watch, but many. "Sadly, we have bid farewell to the handbag as the self-expressive accessory," says Patricia Pao, a retail specialist in New York. As a replacement, she notes, at least one high-end watch company is "embarking on an aggressive strategy to promote watch-wardrobing to their female customers."
