Fab Bag of the Day - Prada Bowler

It really amazes me how PRADA always manages to reinvent itself after creating so many fashion trends and icons. Perhaps its because they are always coming out with updated versions of classic styles like this PRADA bowler bag made from gray deerskin leather with a white antique applique. The pictures don't do this bag justice because it's hard to see just how gorgeous and soft the leather is and has the slightest tinge of distressed finish. So how heavy is your handbag?

By Lisa Jewell Independent.ie

It may be an essential fashion accessory but a survey finds that the average modern hold-all now weighs a ton, and may be a health risk. They're a fashion accessory -- and, really, an absolute necessity -- but modern handbags are quite literally weighing down the modern woman. A new survey has shown that the average weight of a woman's handbag has increased by 38pc over the past five years and now tips the scales at 2.37 kilos (5lbs).

It seems that high-tech gadgets like mobile phones, MP3 players and digital cameras are partly responsible for this increase in weight. However, old handbag favourites such as make-up, hairbrushes, purses and mirrors are still ever-present in Irish women's handbags. The survey was carried out by UK supermarket chain ASDA. We're amazed by how quickly the weight of a handbag has grown -- especially since 2.37 kilos represents only the average figure," says brand director Fiona Lambert.

"This means that, at the extremes, there must be some women carrying handbags which are so heavy that they would put Sherpa Tenzing to shame. "The stress endured by the material and straps of a heavily laden bag as it swings freely from the shoulder is considerable. "It can be the equivalent of a hod carrier on a building site." The increasing weight means that shoulder bags are now the accessory of choice instead of bags carried in the hand or hooked over the elbow. However, the trend for oversized bags means there is even more space to fill with personal possessions. The bigger the bag, the more tempting it is to pack it all in. And carrying that amount of weight every day can have serious health consequences. "When weight is unevenly distributed on one side of the body, it can affect the neck and work its way to the middle of the back," says chiropractor Attracta Farrell of the Athenry Chiropractic and Complementary Health Clinic. "If it's severe enough, it can cause headaches. Handbag weight isn't something that women think can cause back problems -- I sometimes ask clients if I can lift up their bags and the weight is unreal." She advises women to carry the minimum amount of items in their bags and, if possible, to wear a rucksack-type design. "It distributes the weight more evenly across the body. But I have noticed that type of design has gone out of fashion, in favour of the bigger bags. "You should also alternate the bag from one shoulder to another, every 10-15 minutes."

Pack-it-all-in Lisa Lambe (25) is an actress Handbag contents Beret Big make-up bag Wallet Bottle of leave-in conditioner Travel toothbrush Hand cream Travel size hairbrush Script Paperback book Mobile phone Bottle of water iPod Due to the fact that she's out and about in Dublin city most of the time, Lisa has to be ready for different eventualities. "I tend to carry a lot of things around with me, because I don't know how long I might end up staying in town," she says. "I might be going from an audition to rehearsals and then meet up with friends later on."

A self-confessed bag enthusiast, she loves big leather shoulder bags. "My favourite one for everyday use is my leather Miu Miu bag. I love when the leather in the bag gets a little broken in -- it looks great." Lisa says her bags do weigh quite a bit, even when there's nothing in them. "My sisters would ask me where was I going with all that stuff in my bag but it's really about being prepared. "I usually bring make-up with me in case something crops up -- like one time I had to do a photo shoot at short notice, so I needed to have make-up in my bag." Knowing that she carries a lot of things in her bag, Lisa's friends know who to ask for headache tablets or a pen.

The downside is that the heavy handbag can be a strain on Lisa's upper body. "I tend to keep it on my right shoulder and it does feel really sore sometimes. I probably should do a total clean-out." In April, Lisa will be returning to her role as Sorcha in 'The Last Days of the Celtic Tiger' by Ross O'Carroll-Kelly. "The handbags that Sorcha has on stage are very glitzy -- there's a few that I wouldn't mind having!" The burden of proof Here are a few tips to keep your handbag from being a burden on your back. -Grab the bathroom scales and weigh your handbag both with the contents and without. You might be amazed by how much the actual bag weighs without anything in it! -Think through the day ahead and pack your handbag accordingly.

There's no need to cart around sunglasses and woollen hats if the season has changed and you just haven't updated your bag. - Pack a smaller make-up bag with a few of the essentials. You'll only have to touch up your make-up during the day so leave the foundation and brushes at home. -De-clutter your purse of small change -- clear it out every so often or else try to actually use up your change in shops. Irish people are the biggest hoarders of one and two cent coins in the eurozone but that doesn't mean you have follow that particular trend! Organised Elena Healy (24) is a marketing executive with Harmonia publishers Handbag contents Filofax Wallet Keys Pair of gloves Make-up Sunglasses Mobile phone When it comes to her essential handbag, Elena has the contents required fairly well pared down by now. "I probably have about five day bags and I'll alternate them depending on what I'm wearing," she says. "If I use the biggest bag, I'll tend to pop in a magazine to read and a notebook for work. Some days, I'll bring along my iPod and camera as well. "I usually use the same bag for two or three days running but then I'll dump the contents out onto my bed and only re-pack the things that I absolutely need." "I tend to wear quite big bags but that doesn't mean that I have to fill them up to the brim." "I try to just bring things that I know I'll need. Having said that, I'm sure I still carry stuff that I probably don't use all the time." Elena drives to work most days, which means that she can carry things like shoes inside her car. "If I was running around town one day, I'd probably need to bring more things in my bag.If I'm going shopping, I usually bring a light enough bag so I can put things in it." "I tend to swap bags around depending on what I'm wearing," she says. "I usually move the same stuff from one bag to another. For some strange reason, I have a calculator in my bag at the moment but I wouldn't usually have that! I prefer the look of bigger bags but I don't carry that much in them. One reason is that I can't stand not being able to find my mobile phone when it's ringing in my bag." Laura says she's into handbags but doesn't spend a huge amount on them. "I prefer to buy a few nice bags for the price of one expensive bag. There are lots of lovely bags available on the high street. I like to change my handbags around a lot so I'd prefer to buy a few rather than spend all my money on one.I think that being on a waiting list for a handbag is the saddest thing ever." When her two kids -- now aged four and eight -- were younger, Laura's bag did end up becoming a hold-all for baby-related paraphernalia. "I didn't have a separate bag for baby stuff and because I like bigger bags, there was room for baby wipes and soothers. There's a bit more room in it now that they've gotten older and don't need those things any more."

Purse selection based on womanly needs and lifestyle

By E.S. Cromwell

As if picking the perfect purse wasn't already a taxing and overwhelming experience, we women also have to take careful, tedious consideration toward selecting a purse or handbag for multiple uses or occasions. And normally, picking just one purse that can be utilized for numerous purposes, suitable for multiple occasions and complimentary to various outfits is almost impossible. This makes any woman's life a bit crazy, merely because we need to have multiple purses to, well, simply live, but also maintain practicality and some sort of fashion sense.

Gaining perfection, or more so pin-pointing multifaceted usability in our purses and handbags is all encompassing, too much so at times. And this is where the frustration lies as the options seem endless. To fill in all the gaps and meet purse requirements is all too befuddling, but there are ways to organize your thoughts, confusions and inquiries.

Before actual purse purchasing you should know just what you're going to purchase. And in the least, you should know the types of purses you can buy so you can meet your varied lifestyle requirements. Here are five purse and/or handbag options to consider, mull through and research, taking into consideration to your specific situation:

Tote Bag -

Commonly known as the standard 'carry bag,' this enlarged purse, of sorts, is used for toting purposes and proves as a practical option for busy mothers, but still maintains that casual and non-gym bag style look for all women on the run. This casualness helps with retaining a level of comfort in all locations and still provides functionality.

Satchel -

These purses are over-the-shoulder types of handbags that are used for toting purposes, specifically work related. Working women will use these types of bags to tote important work items to and from wherever they travel. Think of these bags as a woman's version of a man's briefcase. Files, laptops, lunches and other work related odds and ends are stuffed in these bags to travel around. Satchels provide a great amount of room to stop a woman's worries of not being able to have enough room in a purse.

Clutch -

This is a type of handbag used for minimal things and purposes. Minimal in the sense that only a few items can fit in a purse with no handles. Basically, what you can hold in one hand is what you can fit in your clutch. Ideally, this is used for evening outings where women can put all their essentials in one convenient and compact spot. Styles can range from casual to classy, based off tailoring and fabric types.

Duffel -

This 'gym-bag' style purse is large and primarily used when traveling on holiday or business trips. Multiple and large compartments are built into these style bags so women can put traveling essentials away, such as: shoes, a travel wardrobe and various clunky beautification products. If you're a traveling woman with lots of items, a duffel is for you.

Hobo -

Primarily crescent shaped, a hobo bag is meant to carry a good amount of lady essentials for women on the go. They're mostly shoulder strapped, with a casual and even work-style look at times, which can change based on fabric and tailoring style again.

Now that you are aware of the different types of purses and handbags, hopefully you'll be able to narrow down, which one -or few- would work with your style, but more significantly, your lifestyle. As already stated, it's almost impossible to select just one purse that proves universal for all our womanly needs and actions. But, this is positive for us women, in a way; now, we just have an excuse, more reason to purchase multiple purses for our versatile qualities.

Facing a Chill, Burberry bets on bags

By Rachel Sanderson

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Jan 15 (Reuters) - In an upmarket mall where movie stars shop, Burberry is testing a new kind of store that may help it weather a cooling economy and cuts to the budgets of the bankers who typically favour its conservative suits and coats.

Under U.S.-born Chief Executive Angela Ahrendts, the British luxury goods house, whose brand is experiencing its biggest revival since its trench coats clad British soldiers in World War One, has come to Hollywood to tap into celebrity-led lust for high-priced handbags.

And there's barely a trench coat or a flash of its signature check in sight.

Instead, the store -- named 'Icon' after Burberry's higher-end ranges -- is crammed with accessories. Rows of sunglasses flank the entrance from floor to ceiling and shelves fairly drip with shoes, scarves and handbags including this season's hit, the studded Knight bag retailing at $2,995. Perfumes, watches and jewellery crowd the till area.

Covering 2,600 square feet -- a quarter the size of Burberry's London Knightsbridge flagship store -- the compact format seeks to maximise the temptation, but cap the cost.

"It's cute," said Sarah Lukes, 37, browsing the Beverly Center store before Christmas. "I didn't realise they made watches and so many shoes. I usually think about them for down jackets and trench coats."

On a visit that also took in nearby Louis Vuitton and Gucci, Lukes had homed in on a pair of Burberry's quilted golden ballet pumps costing $475 and the Knight bag that's been photographed on the arms of celebrities Cameron Diaz and Sienna Miller.

GOLD ALLIGATOR SKIN

For Burberry, there's nothing cute about the project. The Icon store -- one of five worldwide, of which four are in the United States -- is part of a bid to close the gap with rivals like LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton whose flourishing trade in accessories has helped its shares to trade at a 15 percent premium to Burberry's own, based on 2009 forecast earnings.

Britain's biggest fashion house hopes that by expanding beyond its trench coat origins into costlier accessories it can reach buyers of $3,000-plus handbags and top-tier shoes, who may be relatively immune to economic hardship.

This spring Burberry, which made a third of its 450 million pounds ($882.5 million) of sales from accessories in the first half to the end of September, will sell a handbag called "Warrior" in golden alligator skin for 13,000 pounds ($25,490).

"The Icon store test and the expansion into accessories are welcome," said JP Morgan luxury goods analyst Melanie Flouquet, who last week upgraded her recommendation on Burberry stock to "overweight" from "neutral".

She argued a steep sell-off of Burberry shares in the past six months -- prompted by investor worries it was more exposed to a downturn than its more diversified rivals -- was overdone.

Investors have cut the value of Burberry's shares by nearly 30 percent in that period, deeper than the 12 percent fall for the DJ Stoxx personal and household goods index which includes European rivals like LVMH, Christian Dior and Richemont.

That weakness was driven by higher-than-expected information technology infrastructure costs and concern the small size of Burberry's premium business leaves it more exposed to a slowdown in middle-income spending.

Goldman Sachs luxury industry analyst Jacques-Franck Dossin added Burberry to his "conviction sell list" in December because North America provides around a quarter of sales, saying its customers were more sensitive to gyrations in the wider economy.

JP Morgan's Flouquet said the experience of the last slowdown in luxury spending in 2001 showed luxury handbag sales were not necessarily more heavily affected than clothing, and leasing smaller shops would always be better-value than taking on larger real estate in a similar area.

Gross profit margins for accessories also typically stand at 65 percent and above compared with 55 percent for clothing, according to Italian fashion industry association Altagamma.

Luxury handbag sales in Burberry's European and U.S. retail stores made up 50-60 percent of total handbag sales in the first half, up from less than 5 percent some 18months ago.

EXCITED

Ahrendts, who joined Burberry two years ago from Liz Claiborne Inc. to continue a transformation from outerwear maker to luxury brand started by Rose Marie Bravo, said in November she was "excited" by early results from the Icon stores while stressing they were still a trial.

She told reporters at the time she would continue the test for another six months before "investing aggressively" to take the format to scale. That could extend to Burberry operating four different sizes of stores in affluent areas such as Boston, Austin, Tampa and West Hollywood where the U.S. Icon trials are taking place.

The fifth Icon trial store is in Europe, in Prague, a destination for the well-heeled international tourists who are core buyers of Burberry goods.

Design director Christopher Bailey, backstage in Milan at Burberry's autumn and winter menswear show at the weekend, was unfazed by talk of crimped consumer spending and said the accessories business was "going unbelievably well".

And he unveiled new lines, so next time Lukes stops by the Icon store in West Hollywood her husband will also have options.

"The business is on fire," Bailey said after he showed an expanded accessories collection for men, sending models down the runway wearing leather and woollen gloves and hats, and carrying voluminous buttery leather totes.

2008 may test luxury retail market

By Sarah M. Jones
Chicago Tribune

Economic factors are affecting luxury shoppers who once propped up consumer spending; retailers react to slowdown by slashing prices

For some time now, America's more affluent consumers have managed to fly above the economic storms, creating a boon for luxury retailers such as Neiman Marcus Group Inc. and Tiffany & Co.

Not any longer.

As 2008 begins, evidence is building that the luxury market is losing its luster.

Neiman Marcus Group Inc. characterized the environment as "somewhat challenging" and is offering an extra 25 percent off already reduced designer merchandise through Friday. Coach, the highflying leather goods firm, anticipates its smallest fourth-quarter gain in six years and uncharacteristically lowered prices on some handbags just before Christmas. Sales at Nordstrom have stumbled as fewer shoppers reached for the stores' expanded assortment of designer brands. And even Starbucks' "affordable luxury" allure has cooled as measured by the first-ever drop in visitors to the coffee chain's U.S. stores.

While the triple threat of declining housing values, tighter credit terms and rising energy prices have weighed most heavily on the average consumer, taken together the events have created "ennui" among luxury shoppers that is starting to put a damper on their spending, according to Unity Marketing, a firm that tracks luxury consumers.

After years of robust growth, the shift is expected to put luxury retailers to the test in the year ahead, particularly retailers that have relied on so-called aspirational shoppers, or consumers who "stretch" into designer territory when they are flush with cash.

Many luxury brands are going to discover just how dependent they have become on consumers' penchant to trade up, said Unity Marketing founder Pam Danziger. In her opinion, the market for luxury goods has "likely reached its peak."

"A lot of luxury consumers are the leaders, the movers and shakers, the people with corporate responsibilities and the entrepreneurs," said Danziger. "Their investment portfolios are taking a hit. They're feeling the effect of the weaker dollar. They have a lot of questions about leadership in this country. You can't pull stuff over on these people. They know what's going on and they're really very cautious."

The average amount spent by affluent consumers on luxury dropped 21 percent, to $12,142 in the third quarter from an average of $15,283 in the second quarter, marking the steepest decline since the fourth quarter of 2004, according to Unity Marketing. Luxury consumers' feeling of confidence also dipped in the third quarter to its lowest level since 2004, based on the firm's quarterly survey of more than 1,000 consumers with an average income of $150,200 and average age of 43.6.

Danziger said she expects a similar decline in the firm's fourth-quarter survey, due out in January.

Double-digit gains gone

For years now, the luxury segment has held up better than the rest of the retail industry with high-end department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus consistently posting double-digit sales gains.

The luxury segment, excluding jewelry, posted sales growth of 7.1 percent during the 2007 holiday compared with the year ago, exceeding the retail industry's total 3.6 percent growth rate for the same time period, but decelerating from a mid-season gain of 10.8 percent, according to SpendingPulse, MasterCard Advisors' retail data service in Purchase, N.Y.

To be sure, the very wealthiest consumers are still spending, analysts said. But the merely affluent are a different story. They feel rich when their jobs are secure and their investments are growing, but can change their minds if the job market or stock market takes a plunge.

Luxury retailers are already starting to anticipate a shifting mind-set, starting with discounts.

Saks held a day-after-Christmas sale offering up to 70 percent off designer goods. A Marc Jacobs mink and python clutch was priced at $1,032.45, almost two-thirds off its original price of $2,950. Similarly, Neiman Marcus is touting $745 Manolo Blahnik strap sandals for a relative steal at about $400.

"The brands that sell to the affluent will be more challenged in 2008," said Milton Pedraza, chief executive of the Luxury Institute, a New York-based luxury research firm. "There is no question that in difficult times there is a push for a lot more innovation. There were no must-have items for this holiday. They need to be more creative."

Tiffany & Co. downgraded

Pedraza predicts luxury stores will take a page from their moderate department store brethren, focusing more intently on ways to differentiate their stores from the pack. That means more targeted customer e-mail invitations to special sales, boosting exclusive arrangements with unique designers and stepping up service to existing customers.

The Luxury Institute predicts luxury sales will increase at a rate of 5 percent to 9 percent in 2008, down from the double-digit growth of the last three years.

Banc of America luxury analyst Dana Cohen has already downgraded her rating on the stocks of Sotheby's and Tiffany recently on concerns of slower sales.

Sales at a key Sotheby's auction of impressionist and modern art came in below Cohen's expectations, suggesting even the main sources of global wealth -- U.S. hedge funds, Russian commodities and Chinese economic growth -- could be pulling back, she wrote in a report.

As for Tiffany, sales at the jewelry company's non-flagship U.S. stores are moderating. The trend is somewhat masked by an influx of European tourists traveling to New York to take advantage of the weak dollar, Cohen said. For the third quarter, Tiffany posted an 8 percent gain in sales at stores opened at least a year, a key retail metric, helped by a 25 percent spike at its New York flagship. Without that spike, same-store sales would have risen only 4 percent, according to Cohen's report.

Neiman Marcus Chief Executive Burt Tansky cautioned analysts in a December earnings conference call not to "overreact."

The Dallas-based department store experienced a year-over-year decline in its fiscal first-quarter gross margin rate (profit after subtracting the costs of goods sold) in the wake of tepid reaction to some of its women's designer apparel.

"We have experience with this," Tansky said during the call. "We've gone through it before. This customer does not trade down, she does not change venues, she does not leave us. What she does, if in fact this continues to be challenging -- we're not sure it will be, not sure it all will be -- she'll buy a little less."

The History of Chanel

Jacqueline Farrer
FemaleFirst

Behind the Name Part 1: Chanel

When you think of designers, luxury and full-on to-die-for glamour, one name that instantly springs to mind is Chanel.

Famous for quilted bags, Little Black dresses and that iconic double C logo, the French fashion house is one of the most well known and instantly recognisable brands in the world.

With a new film biopic about its legendary creator, Coco Chanel, due out this year the line is currently more high profile and successful than ever.

Coco Chanel was born in 1883 and first established the House of Chanel in 1909 when she opened the first millinery shop, called Chanel Modes, in Paris. She retained the role of chief designer for the company until her death in 1971.

Chanel was famous for revolutionising haute couture by introducing comfortable, casual suits and dresses at a time when the fashion world was dominated by constricting corsets.

With a plethora of famous French actresses soon sporting Chanel’s hats, her reputation was soon established and in 1913 women’s sportswear was introduced following the start of World War One.

The jersey clothing was ideal for the women having to take on hard working, practical factory jobs while the men were away fighting.

With the liberation of women following the war Chanel clothing became known for allowing freedom of movement in comfortable, fluid designs and practical sporty wear as ladies left their kitchens and began to enjoy more active lives.

The first Chanel couture house was opened in 1915 to introduce other revolutionary fashion lines to the brand.

Since then it has gone from strength to strength and is now one of the most famous and desirable labels in the world.

This is, in part, due to the reign of Karl Lagerfeld at the helm. One of the most iconic designers of recent times, with his leather gloves and long silver hair he is instantly recognisable.

Continuing to combine current trends with the class and simplicity of original designs Lagerfeld has a strong vision and continues to keep the brand at the forefront of the fashion world.

There are certain things that always spring to mind when you think of Chanel. It’s likely that all of us have lusted after a quilted bag seen on the arm of anyone who’s anyone at the moment.

Hugely popular with the rich and famous they are instantly recognisable with a chain handle and double C shaped lock on the front. The epitome of luxury they are always made from lambskin, fur or calfskin.

The Little Black Dress, a staple of women’s wardrobes across the globe, was introduced by Coco Chanel in 1926 and is one of the defining pieces of the company’s success.

It was seen as a vital piece of clothing that could take a lady effortlessly from day to night and was a necessity in any fashionista’s wardrobe.

Classic monochrome designs and polished, ladylike styles are common along with the use of tweed fabrics, which began with the traditional ‘Chanel Suit’.

Chanel is also famous for its jewellery collections and, of course, perfume. The signature fragrance No. 5 was created after a fortune teller told Coco Chanel that her lucky number was five. It was released on the fifth day of the fifth month of the year, May 5th 1921.

Ever popular with the rich and sophisticated Marilyn Monroe was famously said: “What do I wear in bed? Why, Chanel No. 5, of course.”

Kiera Knightly has also recently landed the role as the face of the new Coco Mademoiselle advertising campaign.

Along with ready-to-wear and haute couture shows, Chanel presents it’s Cruise Collection every year.

The recent showing was an extremely lavish affair. Held in Los Angeles there were private jets with the iconic linked C’s decorating the outside and a whole host of the most famous celebrities decked head to toe in Lagerfeld creations.

Ultimately, Chanel was, and always will be, one of the most established and glamorous fashion houses in the world, creating new and beautiful designs for us to lust after year after year.

NY Times: The Power of the Purse (Video of Deborah Solomon asking New Yorkers about designer handbags).

She travles by several high end designer boutiques during the video commenting about Chanel handbags, Prada handbags, Gucci handbags, Armani handbags, and many others. The video is right-on the money. Our question is: When is it going to hit a cap? Are the prices going to continue to rise? Or, do we have to do something about it to make it stop. What can we do?

Our business specializes in the resale of high end designer handbags BELOW THE COST OF RETAIL. We've been online for over twelve years and have seen it all! If you have a comment after you watch the video, please send them to CustomerCare@eFashionHouse.com.

Fab Bag of the Day - Yves Saint Laurent Clutch

Although YVES SAINT LAURENT handbags are best known for the Downtown and Muse styles right now, we thought that this YSL bag was worth mentioning. We are really into clutches and small bags that are reminiscent of old-world luxury and unique decor, which is probably why we like this YSL bag so much. Made from dark brown leather with a slight metallic finish, the bag is adorned with gold leather and faux stones. There is something very monarchy about this bag and we love it!

Chanel handbags - Going Loco over Coco!

The Chanel Ligne Cambon Multi-Pocket tote coming soon to eFashionHouse.com
by handbagista

The Chanel handbags line in the French fashion house, Chanel, has had three lives so to speak.

Gabriella “Coco” Chanel opened her doors first in 1912, providing haute couture to those that could afford it. Coco revolutionized women’s wear by borrowing clothing styles from her male friends and replacing women’s corseted outfits with easy going designs in jersey. Coco Chanel closed those doors in 1939.

Then, in 1954, Coco started up shop again, this time providing ready-to-wear suits in tweeds and jersey materials.

(Hello? This is so Jackie before she became Jackie O.)

Finally, the latest to breathe life into the Chanel House of Fashion would be none other than bad boy Karl Lagerfeld.

Coco Chanel personal life reads like a Jackie Collins novel. She was born in 1883 in France to a lower-class working family. Her mother died when she was six and her father soon abandoned the children.

Coco had a brief stint as an entertainer (that’s how she came about her nickname, Coco). She befriended some wealthy benefactors that not only helped her set up shop but also helped her get her first clients.

If Chanel had only produced a perfume, it would have been enough for the fashion world. But she’s also designed the original LBD - “little black dress” - that every woman should have at least one of. And if you haven’t seen that little quilted leather handbag of hers, you must be living under a rock!

That classic quilted leather handbag has been redone for 2005 in different finishes including a wool blend. The purse is finished with the classic double C logo on the clasp and gold chunky trim. You’ll get to unpack it from its standard black and white packaging.

Chanel handbags come in a dizzying array of fabrics and treatments. Tweeds and gold are a popular mix. You can find the classic quilted leather handbag in a number of different colors: hot pink, blue, white, cream, and black.

Make sure you’re sitting down when you read about how much it will cost you to own original Chanel handbags though.

Are you sitting comfortably??

Thousands of dollars.

I’m not kidding. Be prepared to put down at least one G, if not close to two for the pleasure of carrying around Chanel handbags. Hey, if you want to keep up with the jet setters, it’s going to cost you! If you find Chanel handbags with a price tag of under $500, it’s not a steal, it’s either stolen or it’s counterfeit. !!

Brighton Handbags

By Joseph Wunsch

The Brighton handbag was added to the Brighton line of stylish accessories in 1993. Each Brighton handbag goes through 20 steps during its creation. Upon completion of the process a leather patch, embossed with Brighton's statement of quality and an individual serial number is added. As you can see they really do put their heart into every product they make. It is for this reason the company is known for its heart logo. Components for some of the handbags are manufactured internationally in countries such as France, Italy, Spain, China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan.

Brighton handbags are handcrafted in California. At no time are there more than ten being made at a time. There is an attention to detail followed as a rule by Brighton craftsmen that is an exception in this industry. For example there is no tag explaining that the 'marks' and 'scars' are your "guarantee" of genuine leather-they painstakingly cut around the scars- to offer you, a flawless leather handbag. Each handbag is individually numbered, and is registered by its owner. Once registered, they are guaranteed. The leathers selected are the best from all over the world, and the hardware all originally created by Brighton artists and craftsmen, sterling silver finished, and protected from oxidation for everyday use.

The Brighton name has become to mean one-of-a-kind jewelry and fine Italian leather articles that are adorned with exquisite silver-plated ornamentation. Brighton's heart logo fits the company philosophy that the difference in products is a true attention to detail. Most of the items in the Brighton collection have some unique detail, a message engraved on a bracelet or a Brighton handbag with a favorite photograph, that gives them special meaning to the owner. This then leaves a lasting memory to cherish for a lifetime. This has also led to many women having their own Brighton collection.

Brighton handbags are available in nearly 6,000 specialty stores nationwide and 50 all-Brighton stores from coast to coast. Brighton handbags are not sold in department stores or on the Internet. This is keeping with the owner/president policy to only do business with stores with world class customer service. This is reinforced with a 2 year warranty against any manufacturer defects.

What makes Chanel products so desirable?

By Gabriel J. Adams

The name of Chanel, and its logo of an overlapping double-C, one facing forwards the other facing backwards, is recognizable worldwide. The name has become synonymous with quality and style. They say that ‘imitation is the sincerest form of flattery’ and, if that is true, then Chanel is one of the most admired brands around the globe. Unfortunately, this means that the brand has been subject to numerous, cheaper and lower quality, fakes. The company is constantly battling to have these inferior goods destroyed and the manufacturers prosecuted. Unfortunately, many third-world countries to do not offer the same trademark protection as America or Europe and it is almost impossible to stop them being made and sold.

So what is it that makes Chanel one of the most desirable brands of womens’ fashions and accessories? Undoubtedly, this stems back to Coco Chanel’s visionary and revolutionary fashions. She introduced women to freedom of choice and comfortable clothing, being the first to use jersey as her chosen fabric. The restrictive corsets of the 19th Century would now become a thing of the past. Casual elegance was her trademark, and her comfortable suits and ‘little black dress’ became, and still are, the must-haves for modern women. Her twin sets with cardigans and jersey tops are still classic items for any wardrobe. Her style is truly timeless.

Coco herself had a huge influence on the fashions of her time because she wore ‘manly’ styles. These included trousers and comfortable tops. These still had a feminine edge to them but were far less fussy than the womens’ dresses of the time. She liberated women and enabled them to wear clothes that they felt truly comfortable wearing, without losing any of their elegance.

It is no coincidence that many of the world’s top models and actresses have been associated with the Chanel name. Nicole Kidman being one of the most recent to have signed up to advertise the Chanel Number 5 perfume which still remains one of the bestselling scents globally. This all adds to the glamor and desire of the name, Chanel. Women around the world aspire to own a Chanel suit or carry a handbag bearing the ever-recognizable double-C logo.

Millions of people across the globe view Chanel fashion products, accessories, and clothes to be the epitome of desirability. That's no accident, either! After all, it's taken the Chanel brand 100 years to get where it is today!

High-end handbag glut

Christine McConville
Boston Globe

On the cozy second floor of Neiman Marcus, some very focused women picked through the discount bin, studying a $237 Hogan clutch and $667 quilted Marc Jacobs purse.

A few blocks away, at Filene’s Basement on Boylston Street, similarly intent shoppers scrutinized the black Bottega Veneta tote, marked down to $1,799, and a mohair Versace for just $1,859.

“There’s some Prada over there, too” said Aude Soleau, a French woman who moved to Boston last year.

A frequent visitor to the world-famous discounter, she’s noticed that more and more high-end, European-made handbags are selling there.

Industry analysts say that after a few years of heady sales, the designer handbag business is crashing, because in addition to the overall slowdown in retailing, the designer handbag market is oversaturated.

“The consumer is feeling the stress of the economy,” said Michael Niemira, chief economist for the International Council of Shopping Centers.

Accessories Magazine has predicted that the U.S. handbag market will grow just 4 percent this year, down from 8 percent in 2006.

Coach’s stock price dropped to a 52-week low last month, after the company cut prices on some soon-to-be discontinued merchandise.

The high-end handbag phenomenon exploded a few years ago, as images of Hermes-toting Britney Spears and Posh Spice flashed across the media universe.

For many women, a $150 Longchamp tote provided an entry into a coveted world of luxury.

Since then, prices have soared. The Web site “eFashionHouse.com” reports that the average woman’s designer handbag costs $5,000, up from $2,000 in 2004.

But as prices rose, mid-level retailers, such as Kenneth Cole and BCBG, started to compete by making hipper bags, which have siphoned sales away from the most-expensive brands.

In the city’s high-end shops, salespeople said business continues to be brisk. But they also said the high-end handbag market now runs the gamut from Coach, whose Signature Strip pouch costs $138, to Gucci, where the ostrich Queen costs $11,000.

“If someone who wants a $1,500 handbag has to cut back, she won’t buy the bag,” said one retailer who asked not to be named. “But if she’s buying a $17,000 bag, the economy probably doesn’t matter.”

“It’s kind of crazy, when you think about it,” said Caroline, a 32-year-old Bostonian with a chocolate-brown Jimmy Choo tucked under her arm.

“The first time I bought a Prada was eight years ago, and I paid $250,” she said.

Now, she said, that same bag would cost about $900.

Standing in the sea of buttery-soft, cut-rate bags at the Basement, Caroline predicted that expensive bags will continue to sell.

“People are going to keep paying for them,” she said.

But Ron Kurtz, president of the American Affluence Research Center, disagreed.

“A lot of the growth in the handbag market was among the aspirational affluent, who make less than $100,000 a year,” he said. “They are the ones who are really feeling the pinch.”

Even with the rising price of designer handbags, you can still find bags at below-retail prices and under $1k:

eFashionHouse Year End Clearance - EXTRA 25% OFF

Dedicated to offering authentic designer handbags and accessories at below retail prices, eFashionHouse.com announced today a New Year's Celebration with final markdowns throughout the website for handbag lovers around the globe.

Sky Valley, CA (PRWEB) January 1, 2008. eFashionHouse.com named Best of the Web by People StyleWatch for below retail priced designer handbags and recognized by About.com as the top of three online retailers of off-priced Chanel announced today a year-end clearance with lowered prices throughout the site and an extra 25% off savings on its designer handbags and accessories.

There's nothing fake about this New Year Celebration, and there's nothing fake about the designer fashion accessories sold by eFashionHouse. eFashionHouse made a conscious decision to lower all their prices site wide to celebrate the new year, and to give fashionistas world wide a head's up about the increased prices to expect in 2008 for the same branded products.

In 2005, the average price of a high-end designer purse was about $2000. In 2007, the average price hit about $3000. In 2008, expect prices throughout all major Department Stores and ecommerce sites to increase again. "Some Designers have already increased their new collections as high as 20% per item," said Anna Miller, eFashionHouse Owner. "We don't expect this trend to change or fade in the near future."

Unlike other ecommerce sites, eFashionHouse has systems in place for global shipping. Online since the mid-90's, eFashionHouse has offered its shoppers deep discounts on names like Gucci, Fendi, Hermes, Chanel, Prada, Etro, Marc Jacobs, Tods, Burberry, Tano, Furla, Yves Saint Laurent, Versace, Moschino, Dolce & Gabbana, Pietro Alessandro, and many more high-end designer brands. eFashionHouse.com is the home of five fashion stores with an variety of items at all price points. The site was recently recognized by About.com for being the top of three online retailers with below-retail Chanel merchandise -- both, new and vintage. The eFashionHouse.com New Year Celebration requires a coupon discount code to be used at checkout, the code is 25EFH08. The code is valid January 2, 2008 and expires January 11, at which time all items will return to their everyday prices of 25% - 60% off retail.
